![]() ![]() We are confident that the hard work and investments will pay off with stronger readers and students who are ready for college, career, and life in the 21st century. The Blueprint is a systemic, multiyear plan to transform Maryland’s schools to match high-performing systems around the world. In a Goucher poll prior to the Blueprint’s passage, 70% of those surveyed said the State spends too little on education. ![]() It is clear that Marylanders are willing to make this investment. We need to address other issues such as ensuring our students have the fundamental skills in math and that our high school students are on the path to success in college and careers. State, county, and school district leaders will face difficult decisions and will need to invest additional resources. To be sure, implementing the Blueprint will not be easy. It invests new funds in schools where students need additional resources, specifically for English learners, students with disabilities, and students from low-income families. It has begun creating pathways to ensure high school graduates are ready for college and careers, expanding opportunities for students to earn college credits while still in high school and apprenticeships that prepare them for jobs upon graduation. In future years, it will do so much more. The Blueprint addresses today’s urgent need to support educators and improve reading skills across the State. Expanding high-quality pre-K will give more young children the experiences to prepare them to succeed in elementary school and establish themselves as confident readers. Under the Blueprint, pre-K programs are free for children whose family income is less than three times the federal poverty level. ![]() This commitment to literacy is complemented by the Blueprint’s emphasis on expanding early childhood education, which has created new opportunities for 3- and 4-year-olds to enroll in high-quality, full-day pre-K that will prepare them for success in kindergarten, especially in their literacy development. ![]() The Blueprint shares the Moore-Miller administration’s goal to leave no one behind and end child poverty. If students’ and families’ needs aren’t addressed, we cannot expect students to learn. The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future is a once-in-a-generation public investment and opportunity to improve the quality of education for all children in Maryland, including those who have been historically underserved, especially students from low-income households, many of whom are trapped in generational poverty.Īt its heart, the Blueprint is focused on equitable opportunities and outcomes for every student, which means addressing the needs of students and families entrenched in generational cycles of poverty.
